How Old Are You?

Last updated on August 22, 2017

It is a common phenomenon that everybody experience in our normal life that elderly people, especially who cross their 30s always hesitates to disclose their correct age to the people who ask.

While an elderly person tries to be younger than what they actually are.

Children try to show as if they are more aged in front of others. Children think they should be elder to draw attention and consideration of others. On the contrary, elderly people fears to be neglected by other people because of their advanced age.

I would like to share a story of one of my friends who is searching for a job in UAE. Shaji Muhammad Ali, a firm believer in God, is at his 40s and having 19 years of Gulf work experience in accounting field.

Due to Global Financial Recession, he lost his job in 2009 which forced him to relocate his family to India. He came back to UAE on two occasions with visit visa in search of a suitable job. He also visited Qatar but he could not succeed in getting a job. Now it is the third time he is searching for a job in UAE on a third visit visa. With his 19 years of experience, he is still struggling to get a suitable clinch. According to him the main reason for this pathetic condition is his age. Organizations looking for potential young chaps for their requirements at considerably low salaries. There is no way to hide his actual age while his documents speak the correct age. At this juncture, he can only do one thing – pray to God.

Let me explain few incidents from my own life.

Unlike before, nowadays I too started hiding my age on queries I face. This is a quite natural instinct of human as they fear over age will not attract positive favors by any means. Recently I had an amusing response from my Grandma when I asked her age. She said she is at her 70s. The fact is that she had given me the same reply before 10 years too!

Okay, due to feeble memory people at their old age may forget what their exact age is but what about my beloved wife? While discussing age she will always state that she is just turned to 23 though her passport clearly shows 33. Leave her too… my 4-year-old son says ‘Dad next year I will turn to 5 and then I will be able to press the topmost button of the lift.

From above, one thing is evident that all are age conscious and aging is a unique phenomenon which cannot be physically stopped or controlled by anybody. The tension starts on the very first moment after noticing a gray hair while combing. Actually, that is the first symptom of aging which unknowingly starts nurturing some inferiority complex and anxiety in our mind.

Alas nobody can run away from the aging process. Here, I would like to suggest some ways prevent aging. I know, you are reading this with a wrinkled forehead. Yeah.. it’s true! You can check out the aging problem if you patiently read the following lines.

I remember the 65 years old boss of my 35 years old friend used to call him ‘the old man’. His boss is a European and maintaining his health well and finds time in companying and joking wherever possible. He does things as if he is at the age of 30s. He keeps himself always pleasant smart and vibrant.

If we can bring a little smartness in our actions, attire, and communications, a little care to the body, and a little consciousness in what we eat. Finally, unplug the miserable thoughts of aging by actively involving possible mentally refreshing acts.

Spend most of your time with young people and be a close friend of them. Participate whatever they do as a unique member of their group. Maximum possible, purposefully, force others to call you by name (Not by Sir, madam, uncle, aunt, Chettan (elder brother in Malayalam), Chechi (Elder Sister in Malayalam) etc. These are very effective methods to get rid of aging thoughts.

Controlled food will give some aid to your health and skin as well. Use of harmless costumes will not make you isolated from others. Some people are there who never apply dye to their hair as they consider that is a non-naturalistic act. This is, in fact, a big foolishness for whom wish to be young and pleasant among others as long as they wish.

Have to say many more things on this subject, but  I remain.. Please air your views too.

Have a great and purposeful life ahead!

We need to keep this spirit till we die. Most of us run for a master degree in Business Management to become managers and leader. We spend our valuable time & money to learn the effect ‘Hawthorne study’s and ‘Relay Assembly Experiments’. Why don’t we spend a little and effort to learn about the Age Management?  Nobody should face a situation like Mr. Ali. Applying small technique of age management and developing some essential skill could have been saved him for hunting a right job at any stage of his life.

Let us check these following help tips and suggestions made by Dr. Michael Roizen in says. “There are actually 190 factors that influence aging, but 149 that you can change”.  While people cannot change the genes they inherit from their parents, they can change the activity of those genes

Here is an interesting story related to age i just read on today’s news!

The new French President is 39 years old.
But that is not the news.
He is married to a 64-year-old, that is still not the news.
His wife was his class teacher 24 years ago…not still the news.
His then class teacher had a daughter who was his classmate…everybody including his parents thought this teacher’s daughter was his girlfriend…nope they were wrong.
He fell in love with his class teacher when he was 15…she was “happily married” with 3 kids…now the “happily married” is relative in this context.
At 17, he promised to marry her. She was at the time 42 years.
They got married in 2007 with our man now 30…well she was almost 55.
His lovely wife who has 3 adult kids and 7 grandchildren (her first child is two years older than her husband while her second child, the former classmate/sweetheart is the same age as him).
His name is Emmanuel Macron (39) and he is the President of France.

Age is only a number. There are people with 40who behave like my grandma which died 30 years before. Our society put paradigms on us like retire and wait for the death. And death itself is something for most people they fear. We are what we think about and we get like the people which surround us. You are right, we better be with young people and avoid the ones who only think of age and complain. I am 67 and I have no health issues, I eat real food, do my exercise and avoid old people who are full of old stuff. You did a good job writing about.
    Thank you

Good one brother.. A nice reflection. If u can recall at native church in kerala, on the funeral van, there is a small wording, today me tomorrow u.. This is the fact, the youth never remains youth.. Age will catch up with everyone one day.. One needs to live his life, and motivate to keep living. A little bit of prayers and a little reflection of one’s past life is some times good to keep oneself on the track called, life, death and then with for the resurrection and for the pardessa… God bless. ANY WAY I AM 47,nearing closet to experience the life below the earth. Have Fun. FRANCIS THALAKOTTOUR alias RAJAN. BANGALORE

My parents are in their 80s and always say staying active is the most important factor for their health. a lot of their friends with deteriorated health sit around watching a lot of tv. After retiring and moving to FL they took up pickleball. Apart from being low-impact, there is a great social aspect – they’ve got a whole new circle of friends now- and that is another critical part about aging, keeping socially active and engaged to ward off loneliness -which has lots of negative effects.
